What is Generic Zithromax (Azithromycin)?
Zithromax is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia; venereal disease (VD); and ear, lung, skin, and throat infections. In acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, Zithromax is used to prevent pneumonia, called disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.Zithromax is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How To Take Zithromax
Zithromax comes as a capsule, tablet, and liquid to take it orally. It is usually taken once a day for 2-5 days. Take Zithromax exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly. The capsules and tablets should be taken with a full glass of water. Continue to take Zithromax even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Zithromax without talking to your doctor. Take Zithromax liquid at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. The capsule and tablet may be taken with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food.
What is the most important information I should know about Generic Zithromax?
- Do not use azithromycin if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this medicine or similar drugs such as erythromycin (E-Mycin, Ery-Tab, E.E.S.), clarithromycin (Biaxin), or other macrolide antibiotics.
- Before taking azithromycin, tell your doctor if you have:
- liver disease;
- kidney disease;
- a heart rhythm disorder; or
- a history of Long QT syndrome.
- If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use azithromycin, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.
- FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
- Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of Zithromax overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
What are the possible side effects of Zithromax?
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.- Headache
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
- Abnormal heart beats (arrhythmias)
- Indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)
- Seizures (convulsions)
- Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
- Hearing distubances

- Sleepiness (somnolence)

Zithromax Drug Interactions

Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: aluminum- and magnesium-containing antacids, digoxin, live bacterial vaccines, lovastatin, nelfinavir, warfarin. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Other drugs besides azithromycin which may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation in the EKG) include amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, propafenone, and sparfloxacin, among others. QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious, rarely fatal, irregular heartbeats. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and for instructions on how you may reduce your risk of this effect.
Zithromax Storage
Store between 41-86 degrees F (5-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Discard after 10 days. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
