What is Generic Amoxil (Amoxicillin)?

Amoxil is a antibiotic and often doesn't get the respect it deserves from parents, some of whom go so far to ask their Pediatrician not to prescribe it because 'Amoxil doesn't work' for their child. In reality, it is usually recommended as first line treatment by experts for many common infections that affect kids, although it is now often used at almost twice the dose that it used to be.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Amoxil?

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Amoxil or to any other penicillin antibiotic, such as:

Before using Amoxil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially cephalosporins such as Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex, and others), or if you have: How should I take Amoxil?

Amoxicillin should be take as directed by your doctor. Amoxicillin can be taken by mouth with or without food and should be taken at regular intervals and until it is all gone, unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Liquids should be shaken well before each dose.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

What happens if I overdose?

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

Symptoms of Amoxil overdose may include: What should I avoid while taking Amoxil? What are the possible side effects of Amoxil?

As with most antibiotics, children taking Amoxil can develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and pseudomembranous colitis. Other side effects can include tooth discoloration (usually reversible), hepatitis, crystalluria, anemia, reversible hyperactivity, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, convulsions, behavioral changes, and or dizziness.

Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions can also occur in children taking Amoxil, including serum sickness-like reactions, erythematous maculopapular rashes, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, hypersensitivity vasculitis and urticaria. You should stop the antibiotic and call your Pediatrician if your think your child is having an allergic reaction to Amoxil.

Keep in mind that not every rash that your child develops while taking Amoxil is going to be caused by an allergic reaction, so be sure to see your Pediatrician before you simply blame it on an allergy. If your child gets labeled as being allergic to Amoxil, that eliminates an important class of antibiotics that your child can take, at least in the near future.

What drug(s) may interact with Amoxil?

Probenecid decreases the renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin. Concurrent use of amoxicillin and probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin.

Chloramphenicol, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines may interfere with the bactericidal effects of penicillin. This has been demonstrated in vitro; however, the clinical significance of this interaction is not well documented.
